A Glimpse of a Tropical Floral Scroll Saw Artwork
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at one of my latest tropical floral pieces!
Every project begins with cutting each individual piece on my scroll saw. I label the back of every single one to keep everything organized—because with so many tiny pieces, it’s surprisingly easy to lose track of them!
Once the cutting is complete, I shape and sand each piece by hand to create depth and dimension. After that, I add the finer details, like delicate leaf veins and flower textures, before priming and sanding everything until the surfaces are smooth.
With the prep work finished, I sort all of the pieces by their final colors. Each one is painted with a base coat, followed by shadows and highlights to bring the design to life. Then comes one more round of sanding to soften the finish and create even more character. It’s a painstaking process, but watching all of those individual pieces come together into a single work of art makes every step worthwhile.
The final stage is choosing the backer and frame—and that’s always the hardest decision for me! I can spend forever trying to find the perfect combination, but I’m so happy with how this one turned out.
I absolutely love hibiscus flowers (we currently have four blooming in our garden!), so creating this piece was especially meaningful. I already have ideas for more tropical floral designs, and I can’t wait to bring them to life. I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into my process as much as I enjoyed creating it!
